Movies and Games (etc?)
New Superman Trailer
It looks amazing, and the trailer before it was kinda cheesy, and was selling the movie more as a 'comedic' remake, or 'goofy homage' sort of thing. This new trailer, really sells it as an action movie that's really epic. That aside, now it's time for my little rant.
Movies are about telling a story. Games are about playing a game. Too often, are these two things forgotten. Movies with no plot, but a flashing of graphics and colors, lights and computer animation filling the screen. Games with beautiful scenery, excellent animation, and many cut scenes which look great.
However, I miss movies rich in story. Having recently watched Tamara and Vertigo (One's a horror movie a coworker's freind wrote, same writer as Final Destination 1 and 2. The other, is a classic Hitchcock film), I have to say, even though Tamara was very predictable, it did a lot of really nice things with the writing and story. Vertigo, though not up to today's standards of drama, had a really nice story and I enjoyed it greatly.
Combine these, and seeing The World's Fastest Indian the day before that, and I've seen a lot of movies that I've thoroughly enjoyed and that's a rare thing indeed. I had an argument with my freind recently, about the quality of Hollywood's movies. He said something along the lines of "All Hollywood does now is make crappy movies." and I agree wholeheartedly, that Hollywood likes to make a quick (reletively quick) buck these days, and would sacrifice quality at a drop of a hat (like lowering movie ratings to allow a larger audience to view the movie).
9/10, I'll step out of the theater dissatisfied. And now let's talk about games too. I'm super jaded I think, with everything. Games just don't really appeal to me anymore. Sure, I still get excited when I hear new information, but its the same excitement when I see good trailers. Potential, but it doesn't mean it'll ammount to much. Many people forget that games are about gameplay. Not graphics, not music, nothing but gameplay. Oh, I'm not saying everything else is UNimportant, but they're not the focus of the game. Games are meant to be fun. If you had a game that looked great, sounded great, but played like trash, would you consider it a good game? You may like it, I may like it, but I wouldn't consider it a good game. Sort of like, Rat Race. I enjoyed the movie, but I don't consider it a good movie. I may watch it more than once in my life, but I don't think it'll ever be close to my favorites list, even though I enjoyed it.
People are too caught up with 'fear' to actually enjoy themselves these days. It's not 'cool' to be fuel efficient, let's get a gas guzzling SUV, while living in the suburbs of LA who've probably never even seen a real tree. Let's not get a FUN portable gaming machine like a DS, let's get a PSP which can do everything BUT play good games. Nintendo is for kids, forget that. Let's watch a cool action movie, or a stupid comedy (note, there are good comedies, I'm only picking on stupid ones), rather than a well written or meaningful movie. etc. etc. the list goes on, but this is my perosonal beliefs. You can attack me as you wish. It's strange that after watching 3 good movies I rant about how bad things are, huh?
On the lighter side, the the Nintendo Wii looks great, Superman looks good, District B13 is out and I want to see that. (Ever heard of Ong Bak? Then you'll like district B13. Look it up, good stuff.) I'm in a good mood, and I think I'll probably post again, before the day is through... or not, if it's good/bad enough haha. Farewell freinds.

no but your right. these days a good solid plot/story is ignored because all the focus is on the glitter and the magic. movies shouldnt have to be attractive, yet hollow. e.g. pretty much anythin hollywood produces.
same goes with games. the integrity of a certain product is compromised when only the graphics are placed importance on, gameplay is ignored.
heres another one. music. take orbital for example. or metallica. they were once awesome groups with the objective to entertain their listeners and to make music for the love of music. and then you have the mercenary side of it: record companies who demand more sales, more profits. money hungry dogs.
basically, people start selling out once theres dough to be earned.
its all about the honor in making art, in making music, in making movies, in making games, etc. its all about real love and passion. people need to start "keepin it real" and not take advantage of a big budget to lure customers but only to disappoint em later for a quick buck or two.
this is why i stick to indie films. hollywood has done enough damage to our society by producing garbage repeatedly.
ehehe, well said <3 These are the reason I find myself rarely going to (overpriced, I might add... which I just did, so I guess, I did add) movies and buying overpriced games on overpriced systems (note, I know the systems are actually underpriced, and companies make money by selling software, not hardware).
I have a DS, with 8 games I love. Some, I might not play very often, but I bought it because I like it enough to want to support the creators. I love my DS, and will love the Nintendo Wii. <3
The Wii looks very interesting. I haven't been able to play video games since the controllers started sprouting buttons like dandelions, but the Wii might bring me back into the fold.
Still, I'd rather take a crack at Spore.
Robin Williams on demo-ing Spore at E3 was a fun sight indeed. You can find the video on video.google.com or youtube I believe. <3
(And on a side note: IT'S RIDGE RACER. RIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER!) >_>
I read about the first paragraph. It's too long for my short attention span. I'll read your entry in pieces. Heehee xD ::hugs:: I lurve you, though.
I agree with the movies. I watch most of the major blockbusters out there but I enjoy the less popular or off-beat movies a lot more.
Superman in all honest looks good, but I'm not too sure I can like it as I've become to accustomed to the whole Smallville experience and it just seems weird to me seeing someone else playing Clark. I'll watch it however :P
District B-13 looks pretty sweet. I have ong-back but haven't watched yet, and they also made Transporter 2 which was awesome.
Oh..and I hope to get a DS Lite soon enough (Mario Bros! as well!)
Wii = Revolution to me
I was told from my freind in the industry, that Singer hired the guy playing Superman. He was a part-time actor who was working at a bar. I checked his filmography, and indeed, a bunch of small spots on TV shows. My freind told me that Singer hired him because he had a crush on him. :o Because honestly, I do think he's been miss-casted (is that how you spell that word?) and that they should have used the guy from Smallville.
DS Lite <333 Mario <333 The best part about Mario, is the multiplayer. It's addicting. OMG <3 A small snipet from a forum I visit:
"I've played it, and it's short, but fun. Where the game really shines, is the multiplayer single cart or multi-cart. DAMN that's fun. Each player is on a repeating level (scrolling to the left/right) and need to get a preset number of stars (like in Mario 64, not the invincibility stars). You can jump on each other and steal them. You can die, but you lost a star, and every 8 coins you get gives you a random item (Mushroom, Fire Flower, Invincibility Star, Giant Mushroom*, Miniature Mushroom*, Shell Suit.. yes, shell suit*). So you're battling each other (and if there's more players, I think you can have more than 2, but I'm not sure) for stars from each other.
Giant Mushroom: Seen in the commercials, you turn huge and litterally trample over everything.
Miniature Mushroom: You turn small. Really small. So small in fact, that you're able to jump higher (Smaller means less weight ???) and your'e too weak to jump on anyone. Well, you can, but you'll just bounce off them. =P
Shell Suit: Blue Shell suit that you wear, and if you run, then hold down, you can spin left/right and jump, while being invincible while you spin around and around.
There's also the mini-games from Mario 64 DS, and more (I think it has all of them). There's also other VS modes, but I really didn't get to play any of them. Too busy with the that one mode <3"
Ya know...it's basic human behavior:
Person makes some money. Person still works for it. Person makes loads more money. Person lazes about. Person gets loaded. Person scratches butt all day.
